It is a sad St Ives farewell to Adam Handling&#8217;s Cornish restaurant Ugly Butterfly who have announced that their tenure at Carbis Bay hotel will be coming to a close at the end of June 2025, with their last service on 28 June.

However it is good news for Newquay. Not only has Adam&#8217;s pub, The Tartan Fox at Newquay just celebrated one year of opening and the menu there enjoys some of the same AH touches, including the delicious chicken butter, Adam has announced that Ugly Butterfly will be reopening on 9 July in a new location at The Headland Hotel.

The new space will seat 50 covers inside, 20 on the terrace, and 30 in the bar, designed to create a relaxed yet theatrical dining experience that breaks down the traditional boundaries of luxury dining. The restaurant will offer an outstanding wine list, with over 500 bins, making it one of the most extensive in Cornwall.



So far as the beautiful restaurant space at Carbis Bay goes, watch this space for the new announcement.



Two Cornish restaurants have made the top 100 announced at <a href="https://www.nationalrestaurantawards.co.uk/">National Restaurant Awards</a> on 9 June. Paul Ainsworth at No 6 was the highest entry at 25, with Crocadon just sneaking into the top 100, at number 94. Crocadon also made the shortlist for Sustainable Restaurant of the Year.



<a href="https://watergatebay.co.uk/food-drink/zacrys-restaurant/">Zacry&#8217;s</a> at Watergate Bay makes Cornwall&#8217;s recommended restaurants now number 38 in the Michelin Guide.

The Idle Rocks Rosé on the Rocks is a new weekend dining experience centred around rosé wine that perfectly captures the relaxed, sun-soaked spirit of Cornwall’s south coast. Set on the hotel’s iconic waterfront terrace overlooking the Fal Estuary, the offering runs every Saturday and Sunday from 12pm to 3:30pm throughout the summer months.



The next generation of Cornish chefs are on their way: Mia Walter, aged 19, from Bude, Cornwall, was crowned Riso Gallo UK &amp; Ireland Young Risotto Chef of the Year 2025. In a thrilling cook-off on 2nd June, thirteen regional finalists showcased their culinary flair before a prestigious panel of judges. Mia emerged victorious with her inventive and sustainable creation: Beetroot and Red Cabbage Risotto, Davidstow cheddar, Cornish apple cider, wild garlic verde with salted and black pepper cashews and sour cream.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-new-openings">NEW OPENINGS</h2>



Aussie café <a href="https://www.instagram.com/zestfalmouth/">Zest</a> in Falmouth have opened a new harbour terrace bar and kitchen. The Duchy of Cornwall Nursery have opened a new deli. Over in Crantock, new social venue <a href="https://www.instagram.com/halwyn_crantock/">Halwyn</a> brings together a TrackMan-powered driving range, a design-led mini golf course, and a new dining experience led by chef Matthew Haggath. Guests can order small plates and drinks direct to their bay or gather in the feasting barn for seasonal dishes rooted in fire, flavour, and fresh local produce. With its easy-going atmosphere, curated aesthetic, and coast-meets-country energy, Halwyn is set to become a new kind of social space &#8211; part driving range, part dining destination, part event venue.



Celebrated author Michael Morpurgo will appear at a new arts festival in Cornwall this July – narrating his poems inspired by Vivaldi’s Four Seasons,&nbsp;alongside violin soloist Krysia Osostowicz and guests in the majestic church of St Petroc in Bodmin. <a href="https://lavethan.co.uk/music-on-the-moor">Music on the Moor</a> &#8211; a unique festival off the beaten tourist track &#8211; highlights the beauty of inland Cornwall and Bodmin Moor, bringing together internationally known musicians and writers with local artists(9 &#8211; 13 July).



The Fisherman&#8217;s Friends have announced they are putting on a festival. Coming to Stithians showground in May 2026, the lineup features Jools Holland and many Cornish names.

Putting the &#8216;Royal&#8217; into the Royal Cornwall Show on Friday 6 June was William, Prince of Wales, aka HRH The Duke of Cornwall, who was attending as the Patron of the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association, alongside Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, attending as Patron of the Association Show and Agricultural Organisations and Vice President of the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association. 



The Duke of Cornwall has kickstarted a campaign to help a Penzance based YMCA centre with a donation of £70,000 through the Your Help, Their Future campaign.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-cultural-news">CULTURAL NEWS</h2>



Cornwall Museum &amp; Art Gallery announced the winners of The Winston Graham Historical Prize. The prize is for novels set in the UK and Ireland at least 60 years ago with a strong sense of place. It is the result of a bequest made by Winston Graham, author of the&nbsp;Poldark&nbsp;series, to the Royal Institution of Cornwall – the charity which runs Cornwall Museum &amp; Art Gallery in Truro &#8211; where the award announcement was made. Andrew Miller’s winning novel,&nbsp;The Land in Winter,&nbsp;is set in a small village in the South West during the ‘Big Freeze’ of 1963 when Britain came to a standstill&nbsp;under&nbsp;a blanket of snow, and the world was poised between the shadow of the Second World War and the societal transformations of the mid-1960s.



On Winter Hill, Raynor Winn&#8217;s fourth book, is set to be published in October 2025. Look out for our updated interview with her very soon.



Gallery owner Sarah Brittain-Mansbridge of Cornwall Contemporary in Penzance has received an MBE for service to art in the King&#8217;s recent Birthday Honours List.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-surfing-and-sailing">SURFING AND SAILING</h2>



Cornwall’s Warrens Bakery, the world’s oldest pasty maker, is marking International Surfing Day on 21 June by supporting Newquay’s vibrant surf community. Warrens Bakery is distributing exclusive vouchers to local surfers and surfing clubs to use in its new Newquay store, and donating 50p from every voucher redeemed from the internationally recognised day to inspiring surf charity The Wave Project.



Speaking of surfing, members of the public can send in photographs of Cornwall trips, seaside memories, surfing shots and beach days over the years, right up to the present day to the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth &#8211; to bring individual memories and experiences of Cornish coastal enjoyment to life in a dedicated exhibition, Surfing Memories. The new display, which opens on Saturday 28 June, will be a unique ‘album’ of personal and family memories; a celebration of joy and laughter, hardships and hope. Contributions submitted <a href="https://nmmc.co.uk/whats-on/surfing-memories/share-your-memories/">via an online form</a> here. Or there are a series of drop in sessions where Dr. Jenny Lee, Curator of Exhibitions and Special Projects will be able to scan individual images.
